Prof Seong-Seng Tan
Seong is Professor of Neuroscience (Melbourne University) at the Florey Neuroscience Institute. He trained at Oxford and Rockefeller University where his boss was Nobel Laureate Gerald Edelman who discovered IgG. Seong was Senior Principal Research Fellow with NH&MRC until his retirement in 2021.
He won the Amgen Australian Medal for Medical Research in 1997. He has published over 120 papers on Brain Research with over 10,000 citations of his work. His work is illustrated in a number of textbooks (e.g. Human Embryology by William Larsen; Developmental Biology by Scott Gilbert, Developmental Neurobiology by Mahendra Rao).
Seong’s medical research has been continuously funded by the NH&MRC since 1989 (total $14M). He has given a TEDX talk on the differences between male and female brains (TEDX Brisbane).
In 2012, Seong was awarded the Special Achievement Award by the ADA Vic Branch.
For the last 30 years, Seong has continued to practice Orthodontics in his clinic in Bentleigh while living a double life as a scientist.
